Embry-Riddle Language Institute's intensive English program prepares students for life in a university environment. However, the program is also well-suited to people who wish simply to raise their overall skill level in English.
Our classes are divided into the main language skill areas and levels include: high-beginning through advanced.
Entering Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University: Students who graduate from the Language Institute will be recommended to the University without needing a TOEFL/IELTS score. Students who achieve the University-required TOEFL/IELTS score may enter the university after successful completing level four at the Language Institute. For more information, visit our FAQ page.

ELS 001: Beginning Listening/Speaking
Course Description: The Beginning Listening and Speaking course is designed to introduce students to listening for specific details in a beginning-level listening sample and complete tasks requiring fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, matching, selecting answers from a list, true/false, and putting events in sequential order. Students identify opinions directly expressed in basic-level listening passages as well as make predictions about specific content they hear in basic-level listening passages such as using pictures to predict content. Students learn to communicate on a basic level about non-academic topics and in non-academic contexts at a beginning level.

ELS 002: High-Beginning Listening/Speaking
Course Description: The High-Beginning Listening and Speaking course is designed to introduce students to English conversation patterns, informal speeches, debates, role-playing, vocabulary development, group discussions and rules of pronunciation; as well as note-taking and listening comprehension strategies. Students use short-hand techniques such as some abbreviations, symbols, and acronyms at a high-beginning-level. Students organize notes from a high-beginner-level lecture by identifying and writing down main ideas and supporting details, and employing the use of some key words. Students practice using topics from current events and popular culture.

ELS 003: Intermediate Listening/Speaking
Course Descriptions: The Intermediate Listening and Speaking course is designed to develop note-taking techniques such as the Cornell method, Mind Mapping, and /or outlining, along with summarizing and discussion strategies. The goal of this course is to help students to develop listening skills based on intermediate-level lectures and to recognize lecture organization and signals for important information. Students improve their oral ability through work on debates, speeches as well as several formal, structured presentations. Pronunciation and fluency skills are also addressed.

ELS 004: High-Intermediate Listening/Speaking
Course Description: This High-Intermediate Listening and Speaking course is designed to reinforce and expand on note-taking, outlining, summarizing and discussion strategies as well as expressing critical opinions. The goal of this course is to practice listening skills with STEM-based high-intermediate level academic lectures to recognize lecture organization and signals for important information. Students improve their oral ability through formal, structured presentations, speeches, and discussions. Pronunciation and fluency skills are also addressed.

ELS 005: Advanced Listening/Speaking
Course Description: This Advanced Listening and Speaking course is designed to develop critical thinking through STEM-based topics with a focus on listening comprehension and speaking skills essential for success at American universities. The goal of this course is to refine note-taking, outlining, summarizing and discussion strategies as well as practice critical thinking based on advanced-level academic materials. Students recognize lecture organization and signals to identify important information and also improve their oral ability through formal, structured presentations and discussions. Pronunciation and fluency skills are also addressed.

EWR 001: Beginning Writing
Course Description: The Beginning Writing course is designed to introduce students to the mechanics of writing sentences without serious errors in spelling and mechanics that interfere with comprehension. Students write different types of sentences such as simple, compound, and basic complex. While writing sentences, students employ beginning-level non-abstract vocabulary, basic parts of speech including nouns, verbs, and adjectives, as well as proper conjunctions and common prepositions; simple adverb clauses such as time, reason, and contrast. Students also practice negative statements, Y/N and WH question forms in both affirmative and negative formats.

EWR 002: High-Beginning Writing
Course Description: The High-Beginning Writing course is designed to introduce students to the mechanics of paragraph/essay writing. Students write about familiar topics focusing on pre-writing strategies such as brainstorming and outlining as well as post-writing editing. Students are guided through the writing process to produce coherent, well-organized and adequately developed paragraphs which include a topic sentence, relevant supporting details and concluding sentence along with appropriate transitions with a goal of leading up to writing at least one essay.

EWR 003: Intermediate Writing
Course Description: The Intermediate Writing course is designed to develop the writing skills that students acquired in the High-Beginning Writing course. The goal of the course is to help students learn how to write an organized, coherent essay in a variety of formats such as persuasive, cause & effect, and comparison/contrast. As such, students will learn to write well-supported, multi-paragraph essays that includes an introduction with a thesis, a body and conclusion along with appropriate transitions. Focus in this course is on the process of writing including pre-and post-writing strategies such as brainstorming and outlining, as well as editing. This course also teaches students to paraphrase and summarize non-authentic texts at an intermediate-level.

EWR 004: High-Intermediate Writing
Course Description: The High-Intermediate Writing course is designed to reinforce and expand the writing skills that students acquired in the Intermediate Writing course and to set the foundation for research writing. The goal of the course is to help students to write an organized, fully-developed, coherent essay in a variety of formats such as persuasive, cause & effect, compare/contrast and argumentative by incorporating support paraphrased from STEM-based authentic and non-authentic high-intermediate-level texts with a focus on the writing process and developing research and summarizing skills.

EWR 005: Advanced Writing
Course Description: The Advanced Writing course is designed to develop critical reading, thinking and writing skills through STEM-based topics requiring research while also addressing the specific language needs of non-native speakers. Writing assignments include argumentative, cause & effect, comparison/contrast, and expository essays based on analysis and paraphrasing of various assigned authentic and non-authentic advanced-level sources leading up to the completion of a five-page research paper.

Course Description: In this course students will learn and practice the beginning-level skills they need to be successful in level 2 core skill classes. As such, lessons, materials, and assessments will encompass all the core language learning skills with the goal of becoming high-beginning level students.

Goal: Integrated Skills Two is an integrated skills course designed to reinforce and practice the skills outlined in the curriculum for Listening & Speaking, Reading, and Writing Two within the topical framework of American culture.

ELB 3 - ERLI 101
Course Description: Students will learn practical skills for surviving and doing well in Daytona Beach. It starts with an overview of campus and the Daytona Beach area from campus services to fun things to do in the area. The class continues with learning how to get a Florida driver’s license, buying a good used car, and understanding car insurance. From there students will learn how to safely use online sites like Craigslist to find a place to live, and buy and sell things. The course concludes with understanding common illness & injury vocabulary and where to go to get help.
Gov & You
ELB 3 - American Government and You
Course Description: In this course students will learn about the U.S. government, and their civil rights. Topics include how the government works, and understanding their civil rights [including freedom of speech, religion, gun ownership, and privacy rights]. The class continues with how the criminal justice system works including everything from how to deal with a traffic violation/ticket to what happens if someone gets arrested. Students will learn how the process works, what their rights are and how to protect these rights. The course concludes with a brief introduction to CSI & forensic science including what tools police use and some issues in forensic science.
Psychology
ELB 5 - Psychology
Course Description: This course prepares students for challenges in mainstream university classes. It is designed to give students an introduction to psychology in ESL. The topics that we will be working on are the influence of stress on the human body, significance of good nutrition, exercising and health, the importance of nonverbal communication, and many more.
Business
ELB 5 - Business
Course Description: This course prepares students for challenges in mainstream university classes. It is designed to give students an introduction to business in ESL. The topics that will be covered in this course are the time management skills, Porte’s Five Forces of Competition, making a sales pitch, leadership skills, how to write cover letters for CVs and many more.

ERD 001: Beginning Reading
Course Description: The Beginning Reading course is designed to introduce students to the basics of reading in English with the goal of being able to understand and utilize non-authentic word or sentence length material at a beginning level leading up to reading at the short passage level. As such, students will learn basic vocabulary recognition and application strategies through the use of picture dictionaries, realia, basic parts of speech and grouping vocabulary into larger domains. They will also learn how to make predictions about specific content they will read in basic-level sentences and short passages, and how to use reading comprehension skills at a basic level such as sequencing, recognizing facts, and recognizing obvious opinions.

ERD 002: High-Beginning Reading
Course Description: The High-Beginning Reading course is designed to build upon students’ basic reading skills in English with the goal of being able to understand and utilize non-authentic passage-length material at a high-beginning level leading up to reading at an eight to ten paragraph passage level. As such, students will learn vocabulary recognition and application strategies such as context clues, roots, prefixes, and suffixes, limited critical thinking skills such as making inferences and predictions about specific content they will read in high-beginning-level passages, and how to identify the stated main idea and supporting details

Course Description: The Intermediate Reading course is designed to further develop students’ reading skills in English beyond the high-beginner level with the goal of being able to understand and utilize non-authentic passage-length material at an intermediate level leading up to reading at a two to three page passage level. As such, students will learn vocabulary recognition strategies and apply them to terms found in intermediate-level material in a variety of styles/formats. They will also learn critical thinking skills, how to identify the stated and implied main idea and supporting details of paragraphs and longer texts, and how to employ skimming and scanning techniques.

Course Description: The High-Intermediate Reading course is designed to reinforce and expand on the reading skills of an intermediate-level student with the goal of being able to understand and utilize authentic and non-authentic material at a high-intermediate-level. As such, students will learn vocabulary recognition strategies and apply them in comprehending high intermediate-level material in a variety of styles/formats such as articles, reports, essays, abridged novels, and abridged & unabridged short stories. They will also learn critical thinking skills including inferences, analysis, and supporting an opinion, how to identify the stated and implied main idea and supporting details of paragraphs and entire articles, and how to employ skimming and scanning techniques.

Course Description: The Advanced Reading course is designed to reinforce and expand on the reading skills of a high-intermediate-level student with the goal of being able to understand and utilize authentic advanced-level material. As such, students will learn critical thinking and research skills through the use of advanced-level material in a variety of styles/formats such as articles, reports, essays, and unabridged novels and short stories. They will also learn how to recognize stated and implied main idea and make judgments in the selection of supporting details for research purposes, how to employ skimming and scanning techniques, and vocabulary recognition strategies.

EGM 001: Beginning Grammar
Course Description: The Beginning Grammar course is designed to introduce students to English grammar forms and usage at the word level. Such forms include basic grammatical parts of speech including nouns, verbs, and adjectives; simple verb tenses, subject-verb-object sentence order, basic conjunctions, positive and negative statements, as well as positive and negative Y/N and WH question forms. Students will apply these forms in a written or oral context demonstrated through student-generated words and sentences, discussions, and short presentations.

EGM 002: High-Beginning Grammar
Course Description: The High-Beginning Grammar course is designed to build upon basic grammar forms and usage at the word level leading to the sentence and paragraph level. Such forms include basic grammatical parts of speech including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, simple and continuous verb tenses, imperatives, simple and continuous modals, and an application of subject-verb agreement, capitalization and punctuation rules. Students will apply these forms in a written or oral context demonstrated through student-generated sentences, discussions, and short presentations.

EGM 003: Intermediate Grammar
Course Description: The Intermediate Grammar course is designed to transition students from the word level to the clause level forms and usage. This includes an understanding and application of all twelve active verb tenses, phrasal verbs, gerunds and infinitives as subjects and objects, past and present modals in the simple and continuous forms, adverb clauses, real conditionals, and subject-subject/object-subject adjective clauses. Students will apply these forms in a written or oral context demonstrated through student-generated sentences and/or paragraphs, discussions, and short presentations.

EGM 004: High-Intermediate Grammar
Course Description: The High-Intermediate Grammar course is designed to reinforce and expand on the grammatical forms and usage learned in the second half of EGM 003. This includes an understanding and application of all twelve active and passive verb tenses, noun clauses in their active forms, all four kinds of adjective clauses in their active and passive forms, adverb clauses in their active and passive forms, and the five types of real and unreal conditionals in their active and passive forms. Students will apply these forms in a written or oral context demonstrated through student-generated sentences, paragraphs and/or essays, discussions, and longer presentations.
EGM 005: Advanced Grammar
Course Description: The Advanced Grammar course is designed to reinforce and expand on the grammatical forms and usage learned in EGM 005. This includes an understanding and application of all four kinds of adjective clauses in both their active and passive reduced and fronted forms, noun clauses in their active and passive forms, adverb clauses in their active and passive reduced forms, and the five types of real and unreal conditionals in their active and passive inverted forms. Students will apply these forms in a written or oral context demonstrated through student-generated sentences, paragraphs and/or essays, discussions, and longer presentations.
Aviation Topics is a content-based and integrated skills course which uses authentic aviation-related materials to reinforce learning outcomes of Level 4 and 5 Listening and Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Throughout the semester, students observe an ERAU class, listen to invited lectures from ERAU professors, visit the DAB airfield, tour the ATC labs, and much more.
Topics include: Careers in Aviation, Parts of an Airplane, the Four Forces of Flight, Introduction to Aerospace Engineering, Human Factors in Aviation and Crew Resources Management (subject to change depending on student interest)
Goal: Students completing ELB004 should communicate on an academic level in academic and professional contexts about aviation-related topicss.
Outcomes:
Goal: Students completing ELB004 should take complete notes from authentic academic lectures about aviation that contain all of the important/relevant info from the lecture/material.
