Embry-Riddle Sponsors 5K Run-Walk to Benefit Lourdes Academy

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is proud to sponsor the 10th annual “Go Make a Difference” 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Feb. 1, in support of Lourdes Academy, a ministry of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Daytona Beach.

Established 60 years ago, Lourdes Academy currently enrolls nearly 300 students from more than 200 local families in pre-K through the eighth grade.

The race will start and end at the Academy, located at 1014 N. Halifax Ave., following a course through the surrounding historic and scenic Seabreeze neighborhood. This certified Daytona Beach Area Grand Prix event will be professionally chip-timed.

The entry fee is $25 through Jan. 31 or $30 the day of the race.  Lourdes staff and participants under the age of 16 will receive a $10 discount.

Registration is available at, where race results will also be posted. Check-in and registration is from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. on race day and the race starts at 9 a.m. An awards ceremony is scheduled at 10:15 a.m.

Glass candy jar awards, custom designed for the race, will go to the first three male and female runners to cross the finish line, to the first male and first female over the age of 40 to finish and to the top three in the following age groups: 1-9, 10-11, 12-14, 15-17, 18-24, 25-29, and subsequently every five years up to 85 and over.

“Our event is the only one in the area that specifically recognizes runners over the age of 85,” said race organizer Molly Clark. “I can think of one local woman in that category who still runs a mile in under 12 minutes.”

Participants can pick up their number, goody bag and T-shirt from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, in the Lourdes Community Center. They can also preview items for a silent auction to be held the following day.

The day of the race will also include a pancake breakfast, post-race massage, medals for all finishers and a rock climbing wall.
