The Department of Electrical, Computer, Software, and Systems Engineering (ECSSE, pronounced “ecks‑ee”) offers programs, delivers instruction, and performs research in the cutting-edge technologies that enable modern technological life.  At first, the department’s focus seems to concern seemingly invisible aspects of the physical world: voltages and currents, electromagnetic waves, ones and zeros, computational process evoked by a computer program, the organization of complex systems. But those almost intangible attributes are realized by very tangible devices—electronics, antennas, micro controllers, aircraft, satellites—at the core of modern technological systems, particularly modern aerospace systems.

Microprocessors and interfacing electronics—the technologies at the center of the systems design and explored by faculty and students in the ECSSE department—are the enabling technologies of the age: the web, cell phones, the web on cell phones, fly/drive/throttle/brake-by-wire aircraft and automobiles, streaming audio, high-definition video, computer animation, flight simulators, unmanned aircraft, robotics, supersonic business jets (coming soon!), seat-back television on aircraft, satellite navigation, communication satellite the list grows longer with each day.

Students in the department’s programs perform numerous hands-on projects, many employing multidisciplinary teams, as they work toward their degree. Projects range from small track-following robots in the introductory engineering course to rescue-mission coordinated unmanned helicopter and ground vehicles in senior design. The department strives to ensure that students receive the kind of experience in project labs that corresponds to what they will experience in the real world. The program’s focus on technical expertise, industry-grade system development experience, and the kinds of real-time, embedded, safety-critical, highly-reliable systems prevalent in aerospace results in  a high demand for graduates of the department’s programs. The department’s focus on fundamentals and hands-on experience puts graduates in a unique position to design and build electronic and aerospace systems now and for the future. An accelerated Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering is available from the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degrees
