Careers

Civil Engineering growth in the next few decades is expected to exceed the average for all occupations.  The need for new infrastructure and the replacement of aging bridges, roadways, airports, dams, etc., is driving an international shortage of engineers in civil engineering.  Civil engineers who are well versed in the application of high technology and are able to operate well in a team environment – both skills emphasized by the Civil Engineering Program at ERAU – will be in particular high demand.

Historically, civil engineering has experienced starting salaries well above the average for all college graduates and average for all engineering disciplines.  Many new graduates choose government service for their first job experience as a means to gather exposure to the industry and to make important contacts within the industry.  These government positions generally pay a relatively modest starting salary for engineers but offer exceptional benefits and job security.

Once the civil engineer has gained experience, however, the sky becomes the limit for job and salary possibilities.  Civil engineers can own their own company and, if they are so driven, can become self-made millionaires in the process.  Furthermore, job opportunities can be found worldwide.  Every nation, state, county, and city has civil engineers on the payroll.  The civil engineer has the luxury of choosing where they want to live and work.

Civil engineers are also fortunate to have a well-defined career path that is recognized across company and industry boundaries.  A newly-graduated civil engineer will want to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering examination to be designated an “Engineer-in-Training.”  With this certification and several years of experience, the civil engineer can take the Professional Engineering examination.  Successful completion of this exam brings the title of “Professional Engineer” and the addition of “P.E.” to the end of the engineer’s name.  With this important certification it is possible to become a project engineer or engineering business owner, which bring tremendous job satisfaction and salary possibilities.
