Student Advisement

Academic Advising Mission Statement

The College of Business recognizes academic advising to be a critical component of the educational experience of its students. Through individual, collaborative relationships with academic advisors, students are best able to define and implement sound educational plans that are consistent with their personal values, goals, and career plans. While academic advising occurs most visibly in these individual relationships, a broad network of professionals, faculty, staff, and students exists in support of the College’s overall advising mission. The College acknowledges its obligation to provide students with accurate and timely academic advising, delivered through its academic departments.

Academic Advising Goals

The goals of academic advising in the College of Business include helping students:

  • Clarify their life and career goals.
  • Develop suitable educational plans.
  • Select appropriate courses and complementary educational experiences such as internship opportunities, minor courses of study, and study-abroad programs.
  • Interpret institutional requirements.
  • Enhance their awareness of available educational resources that includes tutoring programs and professional organizations relating to their major.
  • Evaluate their progress toward established goals.
  • Assist them in completing degree requirements in a timely manner.
  • Develop decision-making skills.
  • Reinforce their self direction.
  • Seek out and use support services in the institution and the community.
  • Collect and distribute data regarding student needs, preferences, and performance for use in making institutional decisions and policy.

Academic Advising Program Outcomes

  • Students will complete degree requirements within a planned period of time.
  • Students with academic problems will have a support system that complies with academic policies and tends to student needs.
  • Internships and cooperative education opportunities will be explored and evaluated by academic advisors who will serve as career mentors.

Student Responsibilities

To make the most out of an advising relationship, students should:

  • Work closely with their advisor to plan their program of study so that they will take the required courses in their proper sequence to meet the requirements of their major.
  • Discuss their long-range goals, career opportunities, and selection of a major with career counselors, faculty, their academic advisor, and other resource staff.
  • Be aware of changes in academic policies, procedures, and requirements by reviewing their applicable catalog, current Course Schedule, and degree plan.
  • Know basic university, college, and departmental graduation requirements of a chosen major.
  • See that any academic records from other universities are transferred and received by the Records and Registration Office for evaluation.
  • Maintain personal copies of a tentative degree plan, progress reports, general educational evaluations, and transfer credit evaluations until an official graduation application is processed.
  • Accept responsibility for their decisions.
  • Seek help from their advisor when needed.
