Mathematics Placement

Mathmatics Student Employment College Arts & Sciences Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach

The Department of Mathematics strongly urges entering students to thoroughly review all of the material presented in this website.

Placement into an appropriate mathematics course at Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach Campus requires your active participation.

Because our entering students have a wide variety of mathematical backgrounds and abilities, the Department of Mathematics offers a variety of mathematics courses for incoming freshmen. Our goal is the proper placement of each freshman into an appropriate mathematics course based on each student's ability and program of study. We believe the responsibility of registering a student for the correct course is shared between the University and the student.

Mathematics Placement Evaluation

The Department of Mathematics has two evaluation instruments available for first semester, incoming students, both with similar content:

  • The Mathematics Online Evaluation (MOE)
  • On Campus Evaluation (during first semester registration, for students who have not taken MOE)

Mathematics Online Evaluation (MOE)

The Mathematics Department, with encouragement and support from other University departments, has developed and implemented a math online placement tool available for all incoming accepted first year students.

Advantages of MOE

  • Can be taken at home or wherever you are most comfortable
  • Get your schedule before arriving on campus

Mathematics Placement Evaluation Topics

Many topics from high school mathematics are included on the placement evaluation. The questions are chosen from:

  • beginning algebra
  • intermediate algebra
  • advanced algebra
  • pre-calculus
  • and trigonometry

There are no calculus topics on the placement evaluation.

Partial list of general topics you may review for the test:

  • polynomial algebra
  • properties of exponents
  • algebraic fractions
  • logarithms
  • solving equations and inequalities
  • direct and inverse variation
  • real and complex numbers
  • radians
  • functions
  • graphing
  • exponential expressions and functions
  • linear systems of equations
  • solving algebra word problems
  • conics
  • basic right triangle trigonometry
  • vectors
  • graphing the various trigonometric functions
  • trigonometric identities
  • inverse trigonometric functions
  • the unit circle
  • solving trigonometric equations
  • polar coordinates
  • the trigonometric form of complex numbers

Mathematics Awareness Program (MAP)

The Mathematics Awareness Program provides for self-pacing, tutoring and remediation when necessary.

Accurate placement using MOE and course work tailored to the individual student offer the greatest chance for success in mathematics and subsequent ERAU courses.

Take advantage of the MATRIX Lab for tutoring Monday through Friday or attend the course specific Supplemental Instruction in the evenings.
