Climate Change and Environmental Security Climate-Change-and-Environmental-Security
Since 2007, Drs. Jim Ramsay (Homeland Security program coordinator) and John Lanicci (MSA program coordinator) have been teaching a course in Environmental Security. They examine how extreme weather events and climatic anomalies can destabilize different regions of the world, exacerbating existing geopolitical problems and leading to security challenges for the U.S. and its allies.
4D Flight Management System Trajectory Based Operations
The first phase of research and demonstration of Trajectory Base Operations (TBO) concepts, a key NextGen component, using a fielded 4 Dimensional (4D) Flight Management System (FMS). This Task will include a baseline data collection demonstration that will be conducted at a major U.S. airport(s).

This project aims at developing low-cost/ low-power lighting systems that can be deployed at remote airports. Lighting at rural airports is much needed as they give communities they serve a transportation link during time-critical situations such as emergency medical services.
A Database Management System for General Aviation Safety
The research team at Embry-Riddle proposes to conduct a series of analyses to find patterns and associations among general aviation (GA) accidents and incidents. This research work is intended to provide the FAA with analyses of fatal and non-fatal accidents by examining the NTSB database and recommending strategies to mitigate risks associated with such events.
Pilot Awareness of Current and LED Elevated Runway Guard Lighting
Currently, incandescent lights are used at airports worldwide for approach, taxiway, centerline, touchdown, and other lighting needs. Data from commercial packaging of typical lights indicates that the average lifespan of an LED is about 60,000 hours compared to about 1500 hours for the incandescent lights.
Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing for General Aviation
In 2009, general aviation (GA) was responsible for approximately 95% of civil aviation accidents and 89% of fatalities. In spite of a safety record in clear need of improvement, there are various safety programs and efforts underway in the commercial sector that are not yet evident in GA.
Synthetic Speech and Visual Data Communications
Dr. Macchiarella is conducting research, in coordination with the FAA, to determine the parameters for the implementation of a synthetic speech system on the flight deck as a means of optimizing communications between air traffic control and pilots. The project is titled Synthetic Speech and Visual Data Communications for Flight Deck Use. This is a $829K project.
Databank of Scenarios Supporting Development of PTS Guidelines

FAA Industry Training Standards FITS
The FAA/Industry Training Standards (FITS) research project has generated $2.2 million since its inception in 2002 for Embry-Riddle. The current tasks are compiling a summary of all FITS deliverables over the life of the project and developing a database of scenarios for the general public to use in coordination with the FAA safety team.
Transfer of Upset Recovery Training
For the past three years, Dr. Rodney Rogers, Professor of Aeronautical Science, has been involved in research to measure transfer of upset recovery training conducted using flight simulation devices. The research has been funded by two FAA grants totaling $400,000.
Evaluation of 14 CFR Part 91 211
Dr. Smith is working in the preliminary stages of a research project to evaluate 14 CFR Part 91.211(a)(1): Supplemental Oxygen in the ERAU Normobaric Chamber.
Conference on General Aviation Flight Data Monitoring
An FAA/ASIAS grant was awarded through the Center for General Aviation Research (CGAR). The grant was to support the development and delivery of the second conference on General Aviation Flight Data Monitoring (GAFDM; the first was held at Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach campus in January 2007).
Embry-Riddles Partnership with Colorado Altitude Training
Professor Harmon has led Embry Riddles partnership with Colorado Altitude Training (CAT), a company providing high-altitude products to the FAA and other universities, to develop a 10-person unit that would use air machines to extract oxygen from the air in an enclosure creating a low-oxygen environment.

Development of an Aviation Weather Database Highlighting Weather Encounters
The project team, which includes the FAA’s Civil Aerospace Medical Institute, Clemson University, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, interviewed 26 General Aviation (GA) pilots over a 25-month period.
Gap or Risk Analysis for UAS
This project performed (1) a regulatory gap analysis regarding UAS propulsion systems and (2) a risk analysis of such systems. The second component of the research is a risk analysis consisting of hazard identification, risk assessment, analysis of risk exposure, and risk prioritization.

An analysis of US airports for their suitability as test sites for a General Aviation (GA) AHAS was conducted. Approximately 100 airports were analyzed.
Effect of ADS-B on Near Mid-Air Collision Rates of GA Aircraft
The introduction and use of ADS-B in general aviation aircraft and the establishment of supporting GBTS nationally will result in a significant and predictable decrease in the number of aircraft near mid-air collisions at uncontrolled, non-towered airfields nationally.

Terminal Operations Safety Research Project-Landing and Holding Short-LAHSO
This project was an effort that involved graduate students, under supervision of graduate faculty, collecting data for the project operating tow video cameras, recording the position of aircraft - on or above runway threshold to stop - at taxiway exit, with a RADAR device used to record aircraft speeds during final approach, touchdown, and rollout.
