Health Services FAQ
- Are my visits to Health Services confidential?
- The confidentiality of all communications, whether written or oral, will be respected. However, exceptions may be necessary for legal requirements or in cases of medical emergency.
- What immunizations are required?
- All students are required to provide written, physician-certified evidence of two MMR (measles/mumps/rubella) immunizations administered after the first birthday. Certified laboratory evidence of immunity may be submitted in lieu of immunization data.
- Florida state law requires students who live in University-managed housing to provide written, physician-certified documentation for the Hepatitis B series (three doses) and Meningococcal Meningitis (single dose) or sign a waiver to decline those immunizations. ERAU encourages all students to become immunized, for their safety.
- What if I can’t find my immunization data?
Your high school, or another college or university you may have attended, will likely have this information on file. Alternatively, you may take a blood test which will indicate antibody levels to the diseases for which you have been immunized. You may attach a laboratory report for positive antibody titers to the Medical Report form in lieu of documenting immunizations.
Health Services sponsors monthly, campus-based clinics for students who require initial immunization or additional protection from vaccine-preventable diseases. Visit the Health Services website for pricing/dates.
- Is a test for tuberculosis required?
Tuberculosis testing is required for international students enrolling from TB endemic areas. The tests needs to be done within three months of entering the University. Students with positive results will be referred for a chest X-ray and additional care, if medically necessary. The T-spot blood test can be obtained at ERAU Health Services. There is a fee of $55, which is charged to the student's University account. Students may obtain a receipt to file for reimbursement through their health insurance plan or sponsor.
- What can I do in case of an emergency?
- On campus, call extension 6-7233 (SAFE) to contact the Safety Department. After hours, notify your RA (Resident Advisor) and/or Safety.
Off campus, call 911 or seek assistance at the 24-hour emergency services departments of the following local hospitals:
Halifax Medical Center (in Daytona Beach): 386-254-4000- What facility is available for after-hours, non-emergency care?
After hours and weekend walk-in care is available at Halifax Health Community Clinic, 303 N. Clyde Morris Blvd., Daytona Beach. The walk-in clinic is located directly behind the hospital. Appointments are not required but can be made by calling 386-425-6198. Please present your Eagle Card for identification. Students registered in the current semester can be seen and treated without a fee. If you are not a currently registered student, charges will apply. - Do I need health insurance?
All students will be automatically enrolled in the University’s student health insurance plan. Students who have comparable coverage must complete the online waiver form to remove the premium from their student account. Students are urged to carefully review their options before waiving the University’s plan. HMO plans outside the Prescott or Daytona Beach areas may not qualify as comparable health insurance.
To complete the waiver for Spring 2012, log onto ERNIE (see steps below) after December 07, 2011. The deadline to submit a waiver is January 18, 2012. Failure to waive the insurance by the semester deadline will result in the non-refundable insurance fee remaining on your student account. Embry-Riddle is not responsible for insurance waivers that are submitted after the deadline.
International students should contact International Students Services regarding insurance requirements and waiver options at 386-226-6579.
- Start in ERNIE and click on ‘insurance waivers’ under ‘student resources’
- Log onto Web Advisor and select the ‘student’ box if you are a continuing student or the ‘applicant’ box if you are a new student.
- Click on ‘insurance waivers’ under the ‘financial information’ banner. If you are a veteran, you will need to substitute your social security number for the policy number. If you are experiencing technical difficulties, please contact the Information Technology (IT) Department at 386-226-6990.
- Check your ERAU e-mail to ensure your waiver has been approved. If it has been denied, please contact Health Services for assistance at 386-226-7917.
- Does Health Services provide women’s health care?
Yes. Annual physicals with PAP smear, breast examination and contraceptive prescription are available by appointment. Depo Provera injections will be administered if students furnish their own supply with their physician’s written order and a PAP smear report that is “normal” within the last 12 months. Please review the General Services section of this Web site for additional services.
- Can I get maintenance prescriptions renewed at Health Services?
The medical staff will consider maintenance prescription renewal if the student provides the following on their personal physician’s letterhead:
- Diagnosis
- Date of diagnosis
- Medication(s) and dosage(s)
- Date of last prescription written by the physician
- What are the consequences of substance abuse?
There has been recent concern and media attention regarding the consequences of substance abuse on college and university campuses across the nation. Most persons are aware of the dire effects which alcohol and illicit drugs can have on one’s health and safety. Embry-Riddle students should also be aware that the consequences of substance abuse include irrevocable adverse effects on one’s career in the aviation/aerospace industry.
- Does Health Services excuse class absences?
Health Services does not issue excuses. Students are responsible for discussing absences and late assignments with their individual faculty members. Faculty may obtain oral verification of a student’s visit if the student signs a release. Diagnoses are never released/discussed.
If Health Services is closed and flight students need to ground themselves due to illness or injury, they must document the missed activity by calling the office and leaving a voice mail message. Follow-up with a clinician is required when Health Services resumes operation. Students are required to familiarize themselves with the procedures for medical grounding located in the Flight Operations Manual.
