Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies have rapidly become an integral business tool, with applications that range from product inventory to personnel security and access.

While ERAU’s RFID Laboratory within the College of Business is still under development, it has been used experimentally in the tracking of ROTC cadets during official activities, as well as for basic asset tracking experiments. 

The latest technology used by the RFID Lab involves asset tracking in primitive areas using electricity from a battery (and recharged perpetually by solar cells) to power the necessary equipment (computers, readers, antennas, etc.). We are also coupling RFID with GPS to get not only timing/initial location data, but also continuous real-time location tracking viewable on web-enabled devices.

Specific areas of interest in research and application of RFID include passenger baggage routing and location, ground-support equipment location and utilization, and aircraft component tracking in maintenance shops and repair facilities.

The focus of our current research is to study the applications of RFID through efforts aimed at reducing time spent locating a specific item, knowing its current status, and perhaps even specific operational parameters such as temperature and security.
