Lightweight Materials and Structures Laboratory

Composites, honeycombs, functionally graded materials, and truss-based cellular solids destined for use in aerospace applications are designed, fabricated, and tested in the Lightweight Materials and Structures Laboratory.

Student, faculty, and partner research projects are sustained by a variety of small scientific equipment and supplies, hand tools, chemicals, and work benches.  A collection of natural and synthetic cellular solids is prominently displayed in the space, which also supports the aerospace engineering structures and instrumentation laboratory course.

Equipment in the laboratory includes:

  • High-temperature vacuum tube furnace
  • Hi vacuum diffusion pump
  • Drill press
  • Band saw
  • Sanding machine
  • Grit blast chamber
