Small Team Research Lab

The GEARS Lab explores how games and simulation can be used to understand individuals, and enhance education and training. Specifically, faculty and students conduct research in several focus areas from the perspective of human factors; an applied discipline combining principles and theory from psychology and engineering to improve the interface between humans and systems. Studies have included work on ethics in gaming, training team communication and leadership, developing mathematical models of utility and choice in games, motivation and personality.

The Small Team Research Lab of GEARS focuses on how groups of eight or fewer people work together to optimize performance.  Research in this area uses games such as Artemis or Arma 3 to simulate specific environments, placing individuals in roles specific to those environments to conduct pre-determined missions.  Performance outcomes are measured as a function of role adherence and team dynamics.
