The Aviation Maintenance Science (AMS) Hangar is the focal point for a wide variety of hands-on projects that occur on the department’s ramp-utilizing aircraft and powerplant training aides as part of the Aviation Maintenance Science degree program.

The AMS Hangar is located adjacent to the Emil Buehler Aviation Maintenance Sciences Building. It houses state-of-the-art functional training aides and a variety of operating aircraft for test and operations.

Aircraft housed inside the hangar, or on the AMS Ramp, include a Mooney, Cessna 150 and 310, a LearJet 35, and a Gulfstream III (GIII). This variety of aircraft types allows students to gain skills in inspection, troubleshooting, and repair on a range of aircraft — from general aviation to complex, large business jets.

Additionally, the hangar contains a variety of operational aircraft engine run stands that are used for powerplant operation and troubleshooting. Students have the opportunity to gain experience on a number of popular general-aviation engine types, including Lycoming 4-cylinder and Continental 6-cylinder, Diamond, Austro AE 300 turbo diesel, Garrett TPE 331 turboprop, and Pratt & Whitney PT6 turboprop.

Students will use both the aircraft and hands-on trainers to gain valuable experience in the diverse sets of specialized skills needed to earn their FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificate.
