Technology and methods for the development of a sustainable food supply for use here on Earth and a future Mars colony are explored through the Aquaponics Laboratory.

Aquaponics combines fish farming (recirculating aquaculture) with hydroponics. The indoor laboratory is complemented by an outdoor solar-powered hydroponic garden designed and built by students. The garden uses nutrient-rich effluent from the indoor system with rainwater capture to increase crop yields. Research programs include energy conservation and new crop production techniques.

This lab is used as part of several student and faculty research projects in the Department of Civil Engineering, as well as several courses in the B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering.
